Respect and Humility
He who bows before others, others bow before him.
If any friend or relative of yours who is younger than you, due to courtesy, bows before you when you meet, as if he tries to touch your feet by bowing, then what do you do?
You bow down from where you are and hold his hand, or you bow down and start lifting him with both your hands.
If that younger person doesn’t bow before you, should you bow down to them in return? This clearly illustrates that bowing to others can lead to them bowing to you in return. However, if someone is full of ego and engages in this ritual without genuine humility, no one truly respects them from the heart.
Today, people go to temples and bow to gods and goddesses. What is the reason for this? It is believed that these deities had shown humility in their past lives, during the Puroshottam Sangamyug. Because of this humility, millions of people bow down to them in every lifetime, paying their respects. These gods and goddesses are considered worthy of reverence ('vandaniya') because they adopted humility in their time. Thus, people feel blessed when they worship them.
