Egoless Living: Finding Peace Amidst Wealth and Status

In our previous blog, we discussed the importance of remaining in our original, incorporeal, pure, and peaceful form. However, today’s world is so engrossed in the pursuit of money and wealth. Many people, when they acquire substantial wealth, develop a subtle sense of ego—the feeling of “I am rich.”

In modern society, we often address each other by titles such as 'Thakur Ji,' 'Sharma Ji,' 'Chatterjee Sahab,' 'Kriplani Sahab,' or 'Mister Menon.' When introducing friends, people frequently highlight their status: “He is a landlord, his father is a governor, or he is a famous political leader and writer.” Such customs foster an environment where ego is built around money, status, and a little fame.

Let us discuss a few ways to remain egoless while fulfilling our daily responsibilities.

How can we free ourselves from the ego of money, status, and position?

If even knowledgeable and yogic individuals are swayed by ego in such circumstances, what have they gained from their knowledge and practice? What, then, is the difference between the enlightened and the ignorant?

A truly knowledgeable person understands that in this materialistic world, money is unstable. It doesn’t remain with anyone forever. Then where is the basis for ego?

We witness people who are wealthy one day but can lose everything the next—through a fire in the shop, business losses, or even untimely accidents. Money can evaporate overnight, and we often see individuals who die suddenly, leaving their wealth behind. Even after gaining immense riches, a person might still feel dissatisfaction or misery. So why build an ego around money?

Money should be used wisely, with a sense of detachment. One should not develop pride due to wealth, nor feel despair in its absence. Life’s uncertainty reminds us that disasters can destroy fortunes at any moment—money may be lost to calamity, corruption, theft, or fire.

Ultimately, what is the point of ego? It is foolish to become attached to possessions destined to perish.
