How to imbibe the virtue of Simplicity: A Supreme Virtue

People are not only happy with a simple person; they also begin to trust him. They feel drawn to him because his heart vibrates with purity. When a person is not simple, people keep their distance. They feel, “He is a clever person; who knows what kind of selfish motives he has?” Such a person’s way of speaking is not attractive.

A clever or deceitful person is always thinking of his own interests, but a simple person thinks, “If someone receives happiness from me, then it is my good fortune.” That is why people love him, and his words are always full of sweetness.

Simplicity is a supreme virtue. But how do we imbibe it?

Simplicity is very close to God. Simplicity attracts other virtues.

There is a saying: “God is pleased with those who are truthful.” From this it is clear that this is a very great virtue, one that God himself blesses. When a person becomes simple and truthful, other divine virtues are quickly and easily imbibed in him. In this way, this one virtue invites many other virtues.

Another special quality is that when a simple person notices any weakness or vice in himself, he openly shares his state of mind with someone elder—his teacher, sadguru, or caretaker—and learns methods to overcome it. In this way his weakness is gradually removed.

But a clever person keeps thinking, “Should I tell someone about this weakness or not? Who knows what he will think about me?” Because of such thoughts, he does not speak with a clear heart about his weakness. As a result, his correction becomes difficult. Therefore, it is very beneficial to imbibe the virtue of simplicity.

Strategies to imbibe simplicity

To imbibe this virtue, first of all, one should not hold on to anyone’s mistakes or weaknesses in the mind. Otherwise, the mind becomes impure, and loses its simplicity and clarity.

Secondly, one should always remember that we are all students of the one Supreme God. We all belong to one family. Then what is the need to be clever with one another?

Thirdly, I must remember that the more simple I become, the more Bhola Nath, Shiv Baba, will be pleased with me—Bhola, the Innocent One—and will give me blessings and help. The more straightforward I am with people, the more straightforward they will be with me. Not only today, but in the future too, people will feel free to share the thoughts of their hearts with me.

It is also said that truth has a powerful impact on others, and that “truth is truth.” A truthful person does not fear anything; he remains light and happy. One who is overly clever is trapped and weighed down by his own waste thoughts, and he fears even the Judge of Karma (Yam), because he is constantly involved in pretence and show.

Therefore, to remain ever happy, content, fearless, and unshakeable, a person should definitely imbibe simplicity. By renouncing deceit and a flawed vision of others, and by becoming the same in mind, words, and actions, one can truly become simple and divine.
