Sacrifice Without Suffering: The Paramhans Way of Rajyog

The sacrifice of sanyasis is based on detachment. They experience a certain type of sorrow, develop detachment, and then they renounce.

In that state, they do not have the true and complete knowledge of the soul and the Supreme Soul. However, the sacrifice we are going to discuss is based on wisdom, that is, understanding and recognition. Work done on the basis of clear understanding does not involve as much difficulty. Secondly, renouncers go to the jungle and practice hatha yoga, observe long fasts, and inflict many kinds of bodily hardships on themselves. But in the case of the renunciation of a paramhans, or the easy Rajyoga renunciation that we have been talking about, there is no need to undergo physical suffering. It is a sacrifice of the mind and the intellect.
It is the sacrifice of addictions and worldly desires. From one perspective, therefore, it is not difficult; but because it is subtle and mental, we definitely need to do deep inner effort.

Attachment to Sense Objects and the Sacrifice of Craving

There are eight types of sacrifices involved in the highest and most virtuous form of renunciation. The first is the sacrifice of the objects of addiction, desire, craving, or longing. A person has to act through the sense organs, but must not engage in vice or become trapped in any sensory pleasures of ear, mouth and eyes, etc. Today, human beings have become trapped in addictions to food and beauty, makeup, attraction to impure songs, and so on—meaning, they have come under the control of the senses. Because of this, people remain dependent and experience sorrow.

So, considering oneself a resident of the body (not the body itself), one should keep it healthy, and while taking food, clothing, etc., one must avoid falling into addiction or desire. This is the first step of sacrifice. The sacrifice of bad company is also included in this, because when a person pays attention to not committing any sin through the organs of action—that is, when he gives up the addiction to particular foods, drinks, and clothes—then there is no question of falling into bad company.

In fact, by leaving bad company, the resolve to give up wrong actions becomes stronger.
