Freedom From the Fear of People
The Fear of People and the Power of Faith
The second type of fear is the fear of people. This fear arises from a deficiency in the power of belief. If a person has complete faith that we are moving under the guidance of God—who is the bestower of divine intellect, who is infallible, and whose Godly Maryadas are the highest code of conduct—then why would they care about social approval, criticism, or condemnation from others?
If our only concern was to attain that One God, and now that we have found Him, what further need do we have for the acceptance of others?
To begin doubting ourselves just because some people criticize and to think, “Perhaps I am a thief,” is simply a weakness of one’s own belief and determination. When one has attained the one Parmatma, what else remains to be gained, and what is left to fear?
Remaining Carefree in God-Realization
The fear of people and the fear of criticism can only be removed when a person remains carefree. This means that even after listening to what others say, without being affected by it, they stay intoxicated in God-realization. This divine intoxication can remain only when the foundation of faith is strong.
Surrounded by an aura of knowledge, with increasing clarity, deeper belief, and richer spiritual experience—along with the power of speech, the power of strategy, and the power of knowledge—a person gradually frees themselves from the chains of fear.
What to Say to Those Who Criticize
To those who criticize, it can be said:
“Whom are you criticizing? The one ‘Jagdish’ (whatever his earlier name may have been) whom you criticize is dead. He is now loved by God. He has become someone new.”
If you criticize him now, understand that he is following in the footsteps of the Almighty. He is walking in the direction of the One about whom the world says, “the wisdom of the wise”—the ever-powerful Being from whom the world seeks divine intellect.
He is not following any ordinary human intellect, as you might think.
Following God’s Intellect, Not Human Intellect
The wonderful and unique being whom we regard as our mentor, Prajapita Brahma Baba, is himself moving according to God’s guidance. By following the intellect of the One God, a person frees themselves from the clutches of Maya, and their life becomes viceless, pure, and elevated.
When you see so many souls whose lives and characters have become so noble and exemplary through this guidance, will you still not recognize the Creator who has transformed them?
Transformed Lives as Proof
These transformed lives are a living proof of the One who creates such purity and excellence. When faith in God becomes strong and we follow His intellect instead of human opinion, the fear of people and the fear of criticism naturally fall away. What remains is a life of purity, fearlessness, and deep spiritual contentment.
