Freedom From Fear: The Power of Complete Renunciation

Will a complete renouncer have any fear? No. One who has renounced everything, who has nothing of their own, and who politely and whole‑heartedly serves others spiritually and earns puṇya—what fear can such a person have?

What are the fears that a human being faces? What are the different forms of fear, and what are the signs of a fearful person?

The fear of death and of suffering in the body

One form of fear is the fear of death. A person is afraid of dying and afraid that the body might suffer from some unbearable disease or pain, or from some terrible mishap. This fear can arise for one’s own body, and also for the bodies of friends and relatives.

Suppose a man falls ill, and the doctor says that the disease is very serious and worrisome. As soon as he hears this, the patient’s hands and legs feel heavy, he starts sweating, he cries “Ohh No, Ohh No!” and says his heart is trembling—because the fear of death has gripped him.

When a very close friend of the patient hears the news, his face is stunned, his words stop coming out properly, his throat chokes, and his eyes fill with tears at the thought: “What if he loses his life?” The doctor has not said that the patient cannot be saved, but the name of the disease itself is so frightening that both the patient and his relatives become scared just by hearing it. They fall into worry: “Oh No!what will happen now?”

This kind of worry and fearful state of mind comes from attachment, or from the conscious or subconscious memory of wrong karma. Either the person is so attached to the body that merely hearing about leaving the body creates fear, or he is afraid because he knows he has not done good deeds. He thinks, “I don’t know what suffering I will face while leaving the body, or what kind of birth I will take after that!”

The root of this fear and worry is weak determination and a lack of good karma.
