The fifth kind of fear arises from a lack of understanding or insufficient intellect. This fear is a constant presence in a person’s life and surfaces easily. When someone lacks intellect or self-confidence, they approach every action with anxiety, unsure whether the outcome will be positive or negative. There is a persistent worry about how others will judge these actions, whether with approval or disappointment.
Thus, all the types of fear discussed stem from a deficiency in one or more essential powers—whether it be the power of knowledge, determination, yoga, mind, or divine character strength. The root cause of this deficiency is an inability to let go of bodily consciousness, fixed thoughts, attachments, and misplaced compassion. This weakness in sacrificing these attachments leads to significant stress and fear.
